Time pressure is the most common reason club players lose won positions. Here's how to manage it.

The 30-Second Reserve Rule Always try to finish your middlegame with at least 30 seconds on the clock per remaining move. If you're below this threshold, activate emergency mode.

Emergency Mode - Stop calculating deeply. Play solid, safe moves. - Avoid creating new weaknesses or complications. - If you're winning, simplify immediately — trade queens and pieces. - If you're losing, create maximum complications to give your opponent problems too.

Breathing and Focus Under clock pressure, players hold their breath involuntarily. This reduces oxygen to the brain and slows calculation. Take two conscious slow breaths before every move in time trouble.

Practice with a Clock Most juniors practice puzzles without time pressure. Solve your next 50 puzzles on Lichess with a 30-second timer per puzzle. This builds the habit of quick, accurate candidate identification.

Increment Usage In games with 10+5 or 30+30 time controls, the increment is your friend in endgames. Reach a technical endgame with 5–10 seconds and you can play accurately — each move restores 5 seconds. Know your endgame techniques cold (see Blog 1).
