Endgame study is where grandmasters are forged. Unlike complex opening theory which changes frequently, fundamental king and pawn endings remain constant for centuries.

1. The Rule of the Square A quick mental trick to see — without moving your king — whether your king can intercept a passed pawn. Draw a diagonal from the pawn to the promotion square, then build a square. If your king is inside or can step inside on the next move, you catch the pawn.

2. Opposition Placing your king directly facing the enemy king with one empty square between them grants you "the opposition." The opponent must yield ground. This is the secret behind converting K+P vs K endings.

3. Rook Behind the Passed Pawn Tarrasch's famous rule: your rook should always be placed behind a passed pawn — yours or your opponent's. It keeps the rook maximally active regardless of how far the pawn advances.

4. Lucena and Philidor Positions These are the two positions every tournament player must know cold. Lucena shows how to win a R+P vs R ending; Philidor shows how to defend and draw it.

5. Bishop vs Wrong-Colour Pawn When your rook pawn's promotion square is the opposite colour to your bishop, even a pawn-up ending can be drawn. Knowing this saves countless half-points every tournament season.
